Director of Billing

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the operations of the firm-wide billing and e-billing team
  • Create and lead a best-in-class service team 
  • Establish work priorities and performance expectations for the billing team
  • Establish and monitor systems of accountability and measurement of staff performance
  • Work directly with clients, partners and staff to provide billing support and exceptional customer service
  • Develop and maintain policies, practices and procedures as related to the billing team
  • Collaborate with the Financial Systems team to replace manual processes with automation
  • Lead financial implementation projects
  • Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place
  • Conduct root-cause analysis for complex billing issues
  • Ensure that client billing guidelines are reviewed and recorded
  • Oversee client billing maintenance
  • Ensure that all billing and e-billing activity is compliant
  • Participate in interviewing and candidate selection 
  • Provide guidance, coaching and mentoring and performance management to billing staff
  • Manage hybrid and remote work arrangements
  • Identify areas for additional training and improvement; provide solutions
  • Supervise the daily activity of department personnel and ensure operating needs are met
  • Provide problem solving assistance and participates in large department projects
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, attorneys and staff

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10+ years of relevant billing experience in a law firm or professional services firm environment; 10+ years of management level experience required
  • Prior experience managing large teams with legal specific billing software
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field is required; MBA preferred
  • Knowledge of e-billing and legal industry billing arrangements
  • Aderant Expert or Elite 3E is highly desirable
  • Work effectively in a team environment and act as a role model for billing employees
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Deal courteously and effectively with others while delegating work effectively
  • Personally handle more complex issues/duties requiring independent exercise of discretion and judgment
  • Deep understanding of the law firm business cycle from time entry to collection
