While AI is taking over conversations about employment practices and job security, the legal hiring market continues to demonstrate the field’s resilience and adaptability.
According to hiring data released in a Reuters report, employment within the U.S. legal sector saw a historic high this May 2026, showing that demand for legal professionals across law firms, in-house legal departments, and the broader professional services market remains high.
The report notes, “the total number of jobs in the legal sector, including lawyers, paralegals, judges and legal assistants, reached 1,237,200” this year. This is an overall increase of “7.6% from five years ago.”
The data suggests that the widespread adoption of AI tools and new technology has yet to significantly impact hiring trends within the legal industry.
Although incorporating AI tools into administrative tasks may help legal teams work smarter, it has not erased the need for experienced, competent, and polished legal professionals. Legal technology has been touted as significantly reducing project loads, increasing efficiency, and freeing up time for higher-value work, but it cannot replace the unique critical thinking and creative problem-solving that individuals provide.
The legal field will continue to evolve as AI expands and grows. Firms that adapt to this rapidly changing environment by simultaneously expanding their technology and investing in their workforce will ultimately see the most success in the future.
